Let the Light In Again and Again

House designs have changed considerably in the past few decades and the focus is now very much on creating a light-filled home. Rossdale Homes believe that the orientation of the home - as well as layout and design - are all influenced by the home-owner's desire to allow as much light as possible into the home.

The focus with current housing designs is on creating an open, warm and natural environment within the home.

Rossdale Homes incorporates the principle of light-filled, modern design into its large range of homes. The key to providing a well-lit, comfortable home is good design and planning.

When building a new home, careful thought should be given to the positioning of the house. It is preferable that it faces north-south, rather than east-west, to achieve the best orientation with the direction of the sun.

However, even houses which are east-west can have their living areas designed to take advantage of the winter sun. Protection of west-facing windows can be achieved by using pergolas or verandahs. A deciduous vine can be planted on the pergola so it can provide shade during the summer but still let sun through in winter.

There are a number of ways to develop a home that lets in plenty of sunlight. Floor-to-ceiling windows and large sliding doors are popular in informal family and eating rooms as they provide a warm and well-lit area for everyday activity. The light from these areas then diffuses through to adjacent formal areas.

Sliding glass doors also have the advantage of "bringing the outside in" and provide a blending of the internal and external living areas. Large windows are also popular in kitchens, overlooking the outdoor entertaining areas.

The kitchen nowforms an integral part of informal living and eating areas and a large window over the sink benefits both the kitchen and adjoining rooms.

Substantial savings can also be made on energy costs by a well-lit and, in winter, naturally warmed home.
